Mangalsutra (मंगलसूत्र) : Explore Mirraw’s Modern Mangalsutra Collection
The term 'Mangalsutra' consists of two separate words; these being auspicious (mangal) and thread (sutra). Mangalsura is typically made of two strings of black beads connected by a gold pendant. Mangalsutra designs vary by region and personal taste, typically featuring an intricate pendant with intricate designs, religious symbols, or initials. At weddings, grooms typically place it around their bride's neck as a symbol of acceptance and commitment to one another. Mangalsutras have come to symbolize love, commitment and protection in Hindu culture for thousands of years. Modern variations are offered with pendant designs featuring gemstone options as well as detachable features for keeping up with evolving fashion trends.
Mangalsutra Designs have evolved with time, to meet every occasion and outfit. Mirraw offers the latest collection of Mangalsutra chains with pendants in various styles for each event or outfit.
Traditional and Modern Mangalsutra Designs
Mangalsutras come in various styles to meet personal preferences. Traditionalists may opt for plain gold mangalsutras as timeless tokens of cultural values; those looking for modern flair might prefer trendy diamond mangalsutras which combine tradition with contemporary aesthetics. With so many designs incorporating gemstones and metals allowing couples to express themselves freely; ultimately the ideal mangalsutra would reflect your love story and individual preferences.
The Maharashtrian mangalsutra is truly special, with a black beaded chain and two gold vati pieces symbolizing husband and wife like Shiva and Shakti. The black beads protect the marriage from negativity, and there are Nirgun and Shagun beads to ward off bad influences. It can have all black beads or follow the pattern of nine black and two gold ones, making it more than just jewelry.
South Indian Mangalsutras:
In Telugu weddings, the mangalsutra binds two coin-like discs, representing the families of the bride and groom, with yellow thread, signifying unity. Black and coral beads on gold chains add to their significance, and customization options allow personal touches.
In Tamil weddings, the thaali, equivalent to wedding bands, symbolizes commitment and unity. Various shapes and styles, adorned with symbols of family deities or deities like Lord Shiva and Goddess Meenakshi, hold special meaning. Additional gold coins, diamonds, or gemstones can enhance its beauty. Initially tied with a yellow thread, thaalis are later replaced with gold or mangalsutra chains adorned with black beads.
North Indian Mangalsutras: In North India, mangalsutras have a unique style, often crafted from plain gold and suspended from black bead chains. Bihari brides opt for the intricately designed Taagpaag mangalsutra, while 'Bichwa' toe rings are also essential in their bridal jewellery. Some communities like Marwaris and Gujaratis prefer diamond-studded mangalsutras for their elegant appeal, influencing others to follow suit.
Long Chain Mangalsutra: These Mangalsutras typically compose a 20-26 inch long Black Beaded Chain with the desired design pendant attached. Popular among women in the past and still an ideal way to complement Sarees.
Short Chain Mangalsutra: As its name suggests, short chain Mangalsutras feature 14-18 Inches Long Chains for more amazing versatility in design. Stylish women often love this style as it adds elegance to a variety of outfits.
